01Which wind direction works at Mirns

Wind from the south-southwest blows straight onto the beach. Safe is wind from east-southeast (118°) through south-southwest to west-northwest (288°).

NESW windfrom

  • Side-onshore 135° to 185° and 225° to 275°: the best angle: you ride back and forth easily and the wind pushes you back to the sand.
  • Straight onshore 185° to 225°: safe, you always wash up on the beach, but getting away from the shore takes effort.
  • Side-shore 118° to 135° and 275° to 288°: good to ride, but you do not drift back by yourself; stay close to the shore.
  • Offshore 288° to 118°: the wind blows you out to sea; Kitewind does not count these hours as a session.

Everything outside that is offshore: the wind blows you out to sea. Why that is the biggest risk.

02What kind of spot Mirns is

Shallow for a long waySuitable for beginnersOften busyStay inside the yellow buoysNot in the Mokkebank nature reserve

WaterThe water can be a bit choppy. After a long spell of easterly wind there is a chance of blue-green algae.
DepthKnee- to hip-deep water. The shallow part runs 500 to 600 metres out from the shore. Just over 700 metres from the shore it is still about 1.5 metres deep. After a long spell of easterly wind it is no more than knee-deep.
CurrentLittle current; what there is comes from the wind.
Bottom and beachThe bottom is mainly boulder clay with sand. There are water plants in the water. Watch out for obstacles around the water and keep your distance. Rig up, launch and land on the grass field beyond the swimming zone. The grass field is not big. The grass is slippery: preferably launch your kite on the small beach.
ZonesThe kite zone is marked with yellow buoys. West of the kite zone lies the Mokkebank nature reserve: no kiting there. The nature reserve is marked with poles with a stop sign. Keep 200 metres away from the nature reserve. No kiting in the swimming zone. The swimming zone is marked off with a line of floats. Kiting is allowed all year round, within the marked boundaries. At the entrance of the restaurant there is a sign with all the rules.
LevelSuitable for beginners. Many kite schools give lessons here. It gets very busy, especially in summer. If you are an advanced kiter looking for quiet, Stavoren is an option.
Parking and facilitiesFree parking. Cafe-restaurant on the Mirnser Klif for coffee, lunch and a hot meal. The spot has an NKV wind meter.

Rules and zones change: always read the signs on the beach.
