01Which wind direction works at Ameland
Wind from the north blows straight onto the beach. Safe is wind from west (276°) through north to east (86°).
- Side-onshore 20° to 70° and 290° to 340°: the best angle: you ride back and forth easily and the wind pushes you back to the sand.
- Straight onshore 340° to 20°: safe, you always wash up on the beach, but getting away from the shore takes effort.
- Side-shore 70° to 86° and 276° to 290°: good to ride, but you do not drift back by yourself; stay close to the shore.
- Offshore 86° to 276°: the wind blows you out to sea; Kitewind does not count these hours as a session.
Everything outside that is offshore: the wind blows you out to sea. Why that is the biggest risk.

| Zones | From 1 March to 1 November you may only kite here between beach pole 8.200 and 11.300, between Ballum and Nes. Bringing your gear in and taking it away is also only allowed between these poles. From the beach access at the end of the Westerpad, walk to the left. Ride 50 metres away from the high-water line, see the signs. From 1 November to 1 March you may also kite outside the zones, except where kite flying is banned. Other zones on the North Sea side: between beach pole 17.400 and 19 at Buren, and between beach pole 3 and 4 at Hollum. |
